KFF References
Reference locations in WWFF and KFF are selected to draw attention to protecting nature. They include national and state parks, national monuments, national and state forests, plus protected nature and wildlife areas that are managed by national or state organizations.
Reference List Updates
New locations are added to the KFF Reference List routinely. Some are added as new national, or state entities are created. Others are added as we attempt to make the list more comprehensive as many state locations that meet the criteria are missing. There are perhaps 10,000 state managed places to choose from. But the most important additions result from requests from our activators who wish to activate All Time New Ones (ATNOs)!
Recent Updates
- New KFF references have been added in FL (1), MN (4)
- The Proposed References spreadsheet below contains details for these new references.
- New references are effective 3/13/2025 and are ready to activate.
- Have fun!
Reference Documentation
WWFF, including KFF, references are maintained in the WWFF Directory, however the KFF team also maintains several spreadsheets that are handy for quick reference. These include:
- Proposed References: Details on the most recent additions to the WWFF Directory and KFF Reference List
- KFF-POTA Cross-Reference: A handy listing showing the common locations in KFF and POTA with their cross references when they apply
- KFF Reference List: A listing of references by state including reference’s county and grid
The latest version of these spreadsheets can be downloaded using the links below, but note, the KFF Reference List is a very big file that takes a while to load:

Adding New References
We are always anxious to add new places to the KFF Reference List, especially when someone wants to activate them! So, if you have any suggestions, please email [email protected] by Michal OK1SIM updated daily with new reference information.
Rember though that the purpose of WWFF and KFF is to draw attention to the importance of protecting nature, flora, and fauna by encouraging radio amateurs to “Make Nature Your Shack.”
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- New references must be nature related (No buildings, monuments, battleships, statues, old railroads, etc.)
- They must be managed by a federal or state agency (No city parks, private conservation centers)
- They must be open to human visitation (well duh)
Only major state operated Wildlife Management Areas, or equivalents, are considered. These must be major locations (> 500 acres) at this time. This limitation is necessary to manage the number of reference additions. There are possibly over 10,000 of this type of references in the U. S., and KFF is limited to on 500 additions a year.
